Oil seals: excess temperature

Excess temperature at the sealing lip of the oil seal:

The temperature to which the sealing lip is being subjected greatly influences the oil seal life span and can significantly affect its durability. The temperature on the sealing lip is the sum of medium temperature and the temperature generated by friction at the sealing lip (frictional heat). This frictional heat depends on the shaft counterface finish, shaft diameter, the shaft surface speed (circumferential speed), sealing lip preloading, lubrication, medium, etc. The resultant temperature is a function of the heat removal conditions at the respective point of use. The excess temperature at the sealing edge increases as the rotational speed of the shaft. increas
