Storage and maintenance of O-rings

The storage and maintenance of all rubber elements (both natural and synthetic) should be performed in accordance to the guidelines set by DIN 7716 and ISO 2230. Many factors determine the life legth of O-rings: exposure to oxygen, ozone, heat, humidity, solvents, etc. Therefore, proper storage conditions are vital for the O-ring optimal performance and preservation of sealing properties.

If stored properly, the O-ring retains its original qualities for up to several years without significant loss of sealing efficiency.

Storage rooms should be cool, dry, dust-free and easily ventilated. Recommended storage room temperature is between –10°C and +20°C.  The seals should not be directly exposed to heating devices and plumbing installations. If such are available in the storage space, a distance of at least 1m is required. Advisable levels of humidity are about 65%. Avoid direct sunlight, as well as strong artificial light with a UV content, as it causes ozone formation. It is advisable to cover windows, if present, in red or orange materials (specifically avoid blue materials). Do not store electrical equipment, solvents, fuels, chemicals, acids, and other flammable materials in the same storage as the O-rings. If possible, it is strongly recommended to store the O-rings in their original plastic packages.

Additional precaution measures

- Avoid external surface damage; do not stretch, fold, or hang the O-rings as it harms their structure.

- For O-rings that have been stored for a long period of time, we recommend slight stretching to check its conditions. If fine cracks are visible on the surface, do not use the sealing.
